Modern high capacity boilers are of water tube type. The boiler circulation system is constructed of tubes, headers, and drums joined in arrangement that provide water flow to generate steam. Water tubes have high pressures and capacity than shell tube boilers. These boilers can be of single- or multiple-drum type.

Package boilers are generally of a shell type internally fired furnace with fire tube design so as to achieve high heat transfer rates from both radiation heating surface and convection heating surface. Most package boilers are fire-tube boilers, often used for heating or process steam, and generally work at lower pressures than propulsion boilers. If high pressure steam is needed, such as for steam turbines, then a water-tube boiler may be preferred and these are mostly O-type.

There are two general types of boilers: ''fire-tube'' and ''water-tube''. Boilers are classified as "high-pressure" or "low-pressure" and " steam boiler " or "hot water boiler." Boilers that operate higher than 15 psig are called "high-pressure" boilers. A hot water boiler, strictly speaking, is not a boiler.

Package Boiler A packaged boiler is a separate application which is used to get the energy from an incorporated burner with fueled by oil or gas. This type of boiler is proficient in producing huge steam output at a high-pressure as well as high-temperature. This boiler operates variable loads which have a small start-up or response time.
